The Gold Belt Scenic Byway

A 135-mile scenic road

  •  Phantom Canyon
    One of the most scenic and historic drives in Colorado. The gravel road follows the Florence Cripple Creek Railroad built in 1984. Roads are winding, so please do not attempt with a camper, trailer or motorhome.
  •  Shelf Road
    Built in 1892 as the first district route from Cripple Creek to the Arkansas River Valley. It is a thrilling roller-coaster ride, perched above Fourmile Creek. This narrow shelf road provides some of the most adventurous driving ever! Roads are winding, so please do not attempt with a camper, trailer or motorhome.
  • High Park Road – Hwy 9
    Originally a trail that connected the ranches and farms to Cripple Creek and Canon City. Native Americans and gold miners alike traveled this historic route.
  • Teller County Road One
    Right down the way from Mountain River Lodge, this paved road will take you to Cripple Creek – enjoy the ride!

Skyline Drive

A one-way narrow road that rides above the clouds looking over the town of Canon City. Panoramic views of the town, mountain, and prairies.

Local Safe Driving Tips:

  • Have enough gas and water to make it through the byway communities.
  • Be prepared for all kinds of weather.
  • Be alert to flash flooding conditions during heavy rain fall.
  • Stay away from mining sites while on foot.
  • When taking pictures, pull completely off the road and watch for traffic.

Aspen Viewing Drive

Autumn comes early in the high country. September is when the Aspen start to turn their brilliant yellow and you don’t want to miss this!  Our recommended drives for this time of year are Highway 67 through to Cripple Creek and a drive up the Pikes Peak Highway. The beautiful show of aspen glow will have you coming back every year for more.
